Day 4: Harry P Leu Gardens

Another attraction on the accessible list was the Harry P Leu Gardens.

Harry P Leu one of Orlando's most memorable citizens, was born in Orlando in 1884.

Mr Leu purchased four acres of land extending from the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad to Garland Street and remodelled his existing building into two large two story buildings. In 1930 he gave up the boiler making department of his original company and added year after year every kind of hardware, mill building supplies, the newest line of fire equipment, fence material, machinery, engines, pumps, motors and all kinds of metal supplies. From a small beginning he built one of the largest supply businesses in Florida.

He purchased sixty acres on Lake Rowena which he beautified with rare plants garnered in his travels all over the world.

Mr. Leu specialized in camellias and the gardens boast practically every variety known. On December 22, 1961 Mr. Leu turned his beautiful estate over to the City or Orlando for a token payment of $56,018.73 when it was valued at approximately $1 million. The area on the south side of Lake Rowena was fenced and opened to the public as a park and is today known as Harry P Leu Gardens.

Beautifully kept, the entry fee to the gardens is $10.
